Moving to a new country can be exciting as well as intimidating. With the huge checklist of things to do, a critical concern for an expat parent is finding a school where their children can fit in gradually, integrate with the local culture and an international curriculum. That is one of the top reasons for parents opting for a private school with an international curriculum which gives their children opportunities to apply to universities worldwide.
There are a few international schools in Auckland, and most of them are located either in North Shore or Central Auckland. One of the noticeable observations for private schooling in Auckland is that there are a selected number of such private schools offering international curriculum. As such, the application for certain schools have to be made quite early. For instance, as of writing this article piece (Q1, 2026), applications for 2026 are already closed for some schools and 2027 student applications are being invited. We are sharing below a list of schools based on the region which will help you in understanding the school options:
Region: North Shore
School Option 1: Kristin (Early Learning to Year 13)
Kristin is a co-educational International Baccalaureate (IB) Continuum World School offering the dual curriculums of IB and NCEA. The school is located in Albany and has extensive bus services that ply to main suburbs like Takapuna, Milford, Gulf Harbor, Westmere, Northcote, East Coast Bays, Bikenhead and more.
School Option 2: Pinehurst (Year 1- Year 13)
Pinehurst is also a co-educational school offering Cambridge International pathway from Primary through to College. Pinehurst is located in Albany and has bus services with 9 routes across North Shore covering main suburbs like Devonport, Northcote, East Coast Bays, Gulf Harbour, Coatesville, West Harbour and more.
Region: Central Auckland
School Option 1: ACG Parnell (Early Learning to Year 13)
Located in the central suburb of Parnell, ACG Parnell offers globally recognised Cambridge International Pathway from Primary Years through to Year 13. Since the school is on the Innerlink bus route, it is well connected by public transport. ACG Parnell offers a convenient private bus service for students commuting from the North Shore and Eastern Suburbs.
School Option 2: Saint Kentigern (Early Years- Year 13)
Saint Kentigern has single-gender for Year 0-10 and progression to the Senior School (Years 11-13) sees students transition into a co-educational setting. There are two academic pathways: the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or the NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement). Saint Kentigern operates across two main campuses. While the Preschool and Primary schools are in central Remuera, the sprawling Year 7–13 College campus is located in Pakuranga, East Auckland. Most students utilize the school’s extensive private bus network to bridge the gap between these regions.Saint Kentigern bus network covers a wide area of Auckland, from Britomart in the city, to as far south as Pukekohe, out west to Mt Albert and more.
School Option 3: Saint Cuthberts (Year 1- Year 13)
Saint Cuthberts is an all girls school and students can choose between two academic pathways, the New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA), and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. St Cuthbert’s is centrally-located in Epsom and there are buses privately arranged by St Cuthbert’s on some routes connecting different areas like Helenesville, Westmere, Mt Albert, St Heliers, Howick and more. The school is also connected via public transport (North Shore Bus Services, Auckland Transport School buses).
School Option 4: Diocesan (Early Years- Year 13)
Dio is an all girls school and students can choose between two academic pathways, the New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA), and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Diocesan is located in Epsom, just a 15 minute drive from the CBD and a short walk from Newmarket. Diocesan offers bus transport and has multiple routes through different locations like Westmere, St. Heliers, Mt Albert, Helensville, Devonport, Birkenhead, North Cote and more.
Things to know:
- The seats fill up quite early. It is best to apply a year in advance. For instance, schools at the moment (Feb 2026) are inviting applications for 2027 intake as the 2026 application window has closed.
- In New Zealand the school year starts in late January and is broken into four terms(Term 1: January, term 2: April, term 3: July, term 4: Oct), the school year ends in December.
- The fees for international students vary from domestic students.
- Most schools accept international students at any age, but they must live with a parent if they are under 10–13 (depending on the school). Boarding usually starts at Year 9 (age 13/14).
- Most private schools either offer IB or Cambridge pathways. Both are accepted with universities worldwide. The decision should rest based on university preferences.

All students are interviewed and may be assessed to determine whether they are a good overall fit for the school. This includes:
- English language ability, both written and spoken, to ensure students can follow lessons and participate confidently
- Academic readiness for the chosen subjects, based on current level and learning needs
- Personal character and alignment with school values, including behaviour, attitude, and motivation
- Previous school reports and references, to understand academic history and conduct
- Potential contribution beyond the classroom, such as sport, music, service, or other activities
- Availability of places in the requested year level, as intake depends on capacity
- Suitable accommodation arrangements, ensuring the student’s living situation supports their wellbeing and study
