International schools are well known for accepting students from different nationalities and their language of instruction is English. As such, students need a sufficient level of English proficiency to keep up with class learning. Some schools have a pre-requisite that a student(s) and one parent is able to communicate in English. One of the biggest concerns for parents stem from the fact that students from non-native english speaking countries struggle in their education if put in an international school environment. However a few schools also offer English Support Program popularly called as English as an Additional Language (EAL) program. The program aims to support students through inclusion of English in regular and special support classes. A few schools offer them integrated within their tuition cost while others charge an additional fee for the program.


Below are several international schools in Tokyo offering EAL or similar English language support:


1. Shinagawa International School: SIS is an IB Continuum School authorized to implement Primary Years, Middle Years, and Diploma Programmes and has over 40+ nationalities. Shinagawa International School has three campuses: SIS Aoyoko Campus (Preschool \- Kindergarten), SIS Seaside Campus (Grade 1-3) and SIS Samezu Campus (Grade 4-12). The school offers English as an Additional Language (EAL) classes for students in Grades 1 – 10\.


2. ASIJ (American School in Japan): ASIJ consists of two campuses Chofu Campus and ASIJ Early Learning Center (Roppongi) and has over 50+ nationalities. ASIJ offers a language support program in grades 1–8 to support multiple language learners.


3. Capital Tokyo International School: Capital Tokyo International School elementary and middle school divisions are currently candidates for the International Baccalaureate (IB) and are working towards certification. In 2026, they plan to open a high school division that will offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Most of their students are Japanese nationals. CTIS has a monthly fee of 30,000 yen for EAL lessons.


4. Malvern College Tokyo: Located in the city of Kodaira, Malvern College Tokyo is a preeminent British-style IB World School in Tokyo, accredited for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP). The school is building towards a healthy mix of expatriate families and offers specialist support for students requiring English support.


5. Tokyo International School (TIS): Located in Minato-ku (situated in Tokyo’s embassy district), TIS is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School delivering learning through the frameworks of the IB Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, and Diploma Programme and is represented by over 60 nationalities. TIS offers language support for students and New English learners receive support in regular classes and receive extra English lessons while other students are studying Japanese.


6. Yoyogi International School: Yoyogi International School is an authorised IB World School for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme. The school has two campuses: Yoyogi Campus and Jinnan Campus. The school offers a dedicated English as an Additional Language (EAL) program guided by WIDA’s English Language Development Standards and has fees of 110,000 JPY Per Term.
