Tokyo International School (TIS) is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School serving a highly diverse international community in Tokyo. With 380+ students representing over 60 nationalities, the school is characterised by the absence of any dominant nationality or culture, creating a genuinely global learning environment where diversity is a core educational strength. Founded in 1994 as Tokyo International School Preschool with just five students, TIS was established to serve the needs of mobile expatriate families by providing an education grounded in transferable skills, values, and concepts for a rapidly changing world. The school became authorised to deliver the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) in 2005, followed by the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) in 2007. In August 2025, TIS introduced Grade 11, with Grade 12 scheduled to open in the 2026–2027 school year, completing its pathway to a full secondary offering. In August 2026, TIS will relocate to a new, purpose-built campus in TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY, one of Japan’s most innovative urban developments. As the international K–12 school within JR’s Zero Carbon–focused precinct, TIS will place students at the centre of a living model of sustainability, smart technology, and future urban design. Guided by IB principles, TIS fosters open-mindedness, intercultural understanding, and respect for multiple perspectives, enabling students to learn with and from one another. Through its international curriculum, diverse community, and future-ready campus, Tokyo International School prepares learners to thrive as thoughtful, globally engaged citizens.

Academic Excellence
Tokyo International School is a fully authorised International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, offering a complete IB continuum that supports students from early primary through secondary education. In Kindergarten to Grade 5, TIS delivers the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) to a close-knit primary community of around 230 students. Designed for learners aged 5 to 11, the PYP places students at the centre of the learning process, recognising them as active agents and partners in their education. With two classes per grade level, the programme emphasises inquiry, relationships, and community, building strong academic foundations alongside social and emotional growth. For Grades 6 to 10, approximately 160 students follow the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). Entering at age 11 and completing the programme at age 16, students engage in a challenging, concept-driven curriculum that encourages initiative, responsibility, and ownership of learning. The MYP continues TIS’s focus on student agency, critical thinking, and internationally minded education. TIS is also authorised to offer the IB Diploma Programme (DP), with students entering at age 16. Grade 12 is scheduled to open in the 2026–2027 school year, completing the school’s full IB pathway. This full IB authorisation reflects Tokyo International School’s commitment to high-quality, rigorous, and globally focused education—preparing students to thrive academically and contribute meaningfully in an interconnected world.
