Nishimachi International School

Nishimachi International School is a well-established international school in Tokyo, offering education from Kindergarten through Grade 9. Founded in 1949 by Miss Tané Matsukata, the school was built on a vision of strong academic foundations and cross-cultural understanding, a philosophy that continues to shape its educational approach today. Located in Moto Azabu, Minato-ku—one of Tokyo’s most desirable residential areas for international families—Nishimachi benefits from proximity to parks, embassies, and multinational organisations. The campus comprises seven purpose-designed buildings, including dedicated facilities for kindergarten, primary, upper elementary, and middle school students, as well as a gymnasium/auditorium, library and media centre, and a dedicated middle school building opened in 2019. Nishimachi is accredited by both the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Council of International Schools (CIS). The school is recognised for its activity-based, inquiry-driven learning, strong Student Learning Expectations, and a daily Japanese language and culture programme delivered at every grade level. With a long-standing commitment to multiculturalism, academic excellence, and student wellbeing, Nishimachi International School prepares students with the skills, confidence, and global mindset needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

Academic Excellence

At Nishimachi School, the academic programme is designed to provide a rigorous, well-rounded education grounded in global best practice while remaining deeply connected to the local Japanese context. In the early years, multilingual classroom assistants work alongside teachers in every kindergarten class, supporting language development and ensuring a smooth, confident transition into formal schooling. This additional support continues through Grades 1 and 2 with grade-level team assistants, allowing young learners to feel secure, supported, and ready to engage academically. The curriculum draws from internationally respected frameworks, including the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), Common Core, and AERO (American Education Reaches Out) standards. Core subjects—English, mathematics, science, and social studies—are enriched by a broad specialist programme that includes daily Japanese, music, physical education, art, drama, exploratory learning, community service, and outdoor education. A defining feature of Nishimachi’s programme is its strong emphasis on Japanese language and culture, supported by small class sizes that allow for personalised instruction, particularly in language and social studies. Student progress is carefully monitored using internationally benchmarked assessments. From Grades 2 to 9, students sit MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) tests in mathematics, reading, and language usage twice yearly, providing adaptive insights into individual growth. In addition, students in Grades 3 to 9 participate in the ISA Writing Assessments, evaluating narrative, reflective, expository, and argumentative writing skills against global standards. These external assessments are used alongside teacher-led evaluations to provide meaningful feedback to students and families, ensuring a clear understanding of progress and next steps. Through project-based learning, strong academic foundations, and global perspectives, Nishimachi equips students to thrive as confident learners in an international community.

Beyond Classroom

At Nishimachi School, learning extends well beyond the school day through a rich and varied extracurricular programme designed to enrich students’ interests, skills, and well-being. Students can choose from early-morning, after-school, and weekend activities, offered both by the school community and by approved external providers. These opportunities span sports, arts, culture, and academic enrichment, allowing students to explore new passions or deepen existing ones. Activities include Hawaiian hula dance, drama, ikebana, Japanese tea ceremony, shūji (calligraphy), computer club, abacus, beginner and intermediate bands, as well as tennis, aikido, fencing, soccer, and volleyball. Programmes such as Girl Daisy Scouts further encourage leadership, service, and personal growth. Sport plays a strong role in student life. Grades 6–9 students compete in the Kanto Plain Middle School Sports League, facing both international and local schools in basketball, volleyball, cross country, and track and field. Additional sports offerings include soccer, badminton, and athletics, providing pathways for both recreational participation and competitive play. Together, these co-curricular experiences complement Nishimachi’s academic programme, helping students build confidence, teamwork, cultural appreciation, and a balanced school life—both in and beyond the classroom.
