The American School in Japan (ASIJ)

We have over 50 nationalities represented within our student body. American families make up about half of our student body and are keen to continue to diversify our representation. Close to half of our families are bi-cultural with parents from the US and Japan. For more details, please check our Annual Report.

Academic Excellence

This school offers a thoughtfully designed learning journey from Early Learning through High School, focused on holistic development, academic rigour, and global-mindedness. In the Early Learning Centre (Nursery, Pre-K, and Kindergarten), children learn in a nurturing, child-centred environment grounded in research-informed early learning philosophies. Teaching balances developmental goals with clear academic standards, supporting cognitive, social, emotional, and physical growth while fostering curiosity, confidence, and a love of discovery from the earliest years. The Elementary School builds strong foundations in both academic learning and personal development. Teachers create safe, flexible, and inclusive environments where students are encouraged to think independently, take ownership of their learning, and view mistakes as opportunities for growth. Social and emotional wellbeing is central, ensuring students develop self-awareness, resilience, and readiness for increasingly complex intellectual challenges. In Middle School, learning is structured through a rotating block schedule that promotes depth of study, with daily Humanities classes and extended lesson periods across subjects. Advisory sessions provide consistent pastoral support. Learning is further enriched through an extended campus programme, where students explore diverse regions across Japan—bringing the curriculum to life through real-world, experiential learning that strengthens relationships and global understanding. At High School, students benefit from a broad and flexible academic offering, including a wide range of Advanced Placement (AP) courses and the AP Capstone Diploma. Additional opportunities include university-level courses through Syracuse University Project Advance (SUPA) and global online learning via the Global Online Academy (GOA). These pathways allow students to engage in advanced inquiry, research, and collaboration while developing cultural competence and preparing for success at leading universities worldwide.

Beyond Classroom

At The American School in Japan (ASIJ), learning extends far beyond academics through a school-wide co-curricular programme of over 170 activities, offering depth, choice, and flexibility rarely matched in the region. Students are encouraged to explore interests freely—whether in the arts, athletics, STEM, or service—without being confined to a single track. Arts and performance are a defining strength. The ASIJ Theatre hosts world-renowned speakers and performers, while students gain hands-on experience through a professional-grade production environment, from acting and music to stagecraft, film, and media. Each division stages annual productions, with additional opportunities in jazz ensembles, orchestras, choirs, ASIJ TV, film-making, and traditional Japanese theatre. Sport is inclusive and competitive, with High School teams competing across 15 sports in the Kanto Plain League, and Middle School offering 20 sports at both competitive and recreational levels. Students participate not only as athletes but also as managers, trainers, coaches, and event staff, supported by ASIJ’s partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance, which emphasises character, teamwork, and integrity. Unique programmes such as Shotokan karate and kendo span all divisions, with age-appropriate offerings beginning in the ELC. STEM and innovation are deeply embedded. Students progress from early coding and hands-on engineering to robotics, app development, VEX competitions, bioengineering through iGEM, and international mathematics and academic competitions. Service and leadership are equally prominent, with initiatives such as Model United Nations, Amnesty International, and over 25 active service projects, empowering students to engage with social justice, environmental issues, and global challenges. Together, ASIJ’s co-curricular ecosystem ensures students grow as confident individuals—capable of excelling in the classroom, on the field, on stage, and in the wider world.
