The British School in Tokyo (BST)

The British School in Tokyo (BST) is a leading international school offering a broad and balanced education based on the National Curriculum for England for students aged 3 to 18. Established in 1989, BST has built a strong reputation for academic excellence, high-quality teaching, and pastoral support, serving a diverse international community in Japan. BST operates across centrally located campuses in Tokyo, developed through long-standing partnerships with Shibuya Kyoiku Gakuen (SKG) and Showa Women’s University (SWU). These campuses are easily accessible by public transport, allowing families to benefit from the convenience of city-based schooling. The school’s urban setting also enables learning beyond the classroom, with access to parks, museums, and cultural institutions enriching the curriculum. With students representing 65 nationalities, BST offers a truly international learning environment while maintaining small class sizes (maximum 22 students) to ensure personalised attention. By combining British academic rigour with the opportunities of Tokyo’s global city environment, BST prepares students for success in further education and life beyond school.

Academic Excellence

At The British School in Tokyo (BST), the academic journey is thoughtfully designed to support students from early childhood through to pre-university education, combining strong foundations with global pathways. Early Years (Nursery & Reception – EYFS) BST’s Early Years Foundation Stage nurtures children’s social, emotional, physical, and early academic development. Guided by Reggio Emilia principles, learning is shaped around children’s interests, with carefully planned indoor and outdoor experiences that encourage curiosity, independence, and joyful exploration. Primary School (Years 1–6) The Primary curriculum is broad, balanced, and skills-based, grounded in the English National Curriculum while extending beyond it. Students develop strong foundations in literacy and numeracy alongside creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Lower Secondary (Years 7–9 | Key Stage 3) Key Stage 3 provides both breadth and depth, enabling students to explore ideas across subject areas, develop inquiry skills, and pursue emerging interests. The curriculum, based on the English National Curriculum and adapted to BST’s international context, emphasises problem-solving, critical thinking, and global awareness. Upper Secondary (Years 10–11 | Key Stage 4) Students begin their GCSE / (I)GCSE programmes, selecting subjects that align with their strengths and passions. These internationally recognised qualifications are externally assessed and prepare students for advanced study. Senior School (Years 12–13) From August 2025, BST offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) for Years 12 and 13, providing a rigorous, globally respected pathway to leading universities worldwide. (The final A-Level cohort runs from 2024–2026.) Together, BST’s academic structure delivers a coherent, future-focused education that balances academic excellence with personal growth and global readiness.

Beyond Classroom

While The British School in Tokyo (BST) is widely recognised for sporting, musical, and theatrical excellence, these achievements are underpinned by an exceptionally broad and purposeful extracurricular programme. With over 130 clubs offered each year, students across all age groups are encouraged to explore interests, build skills, and develop confidence beyond the classroom. A defining feature of student life at BST is the BST Outdoors programme, centred on annual residential trips for students from Year 1 through to Year 13. These experiences—ranging from river rafting and canyoning to mountain biking, hiking, and camping—support personal growth, resilience, teamwork, and self-discovery in real-world settings. Sport and Physical Education play an integral role from Nursery to Year 13. Delivered by specialist teachers, the programme promotes a lifelong love of physical activity while emphasising teamwork, respect, resilience, and sportsmanship. Students progress from fundamental skill development to representing the school at local, national, and international levels, including events such as the FOBISIA Games. Swimming is a cornerstone of the curriculum, taught from Nursery by specialist coaches, with weekly swimming and water safety lessons in Years 1–6 and continued participation through Key Stage 3. The Performing Arts are equally embedded in school life. Drama is a compulsory part of the Key Stage 3 curriculum, with students developing performance techniques through a wide range of texts, styles, and theatrical traditions. At Key Stage 4, students may opt for IGCSE Drama, while music pathways extend from specialist-led Early Years and Primary programmes through GCSE Music in Years 10–11 and IBDP Music in Years 12–13, preparing students for top universities and music conservatoires worldwide. Visual Arts progression begins in the Early Years with exploratory mark-making and material use, advancing through Key Stages 1 and 2 into more refined techniques, historical and contemporary artist studies, and the use of sketchbooks to document creative thinking. Purpose-built art studio facilities support students in developing technical skill, creativity, and critical reflection. Together, BST’s co-curricular, outdoor, sporting, and creative programmes ensure students experience a rich, balanced education—one that nurtures talent, character, and global-mindedness well beyond the classroom.
