Academic

Academic Excellence

At SIS, students follow a clear, internationally recognised IB pathway that supports growth from early childhood through to pre-university study. Early Years (Ages 3–5 | IB PYP Early Years – Aoyoko Campus) Learning begins in the Early Learning Center, where the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) Early Years curriculum encourages play, exploration, and inquiry. Through carefully selected units of inquiry, children engage in construction, art, sensory, language, and dramatic play while developing the PYP’s Approaches to Learning skills—thinking, communication, social, self-management, and research. This stage lays strong foundations for curiosity, independence, and confidence. Primary School (IB Primary Years Programme) The PYP provides an engaging and challenging learning environment that addresses each child’s physical, social, intellectual, aesthetic, and cultural development. Inquiry-based learning helps students make meaningful connections between school, home, and the wider world, nurturing empathy, reflection, and international-mindedness. Middle School (IB Middle Years Programme) The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) builds student agency, inquiry, and reflection through a concept-driven curriculum. Students deepen their understanding of local and global contexts, develop leadership skills, and apply learning to real-world situations—preparing them to become confident, lifelong learners. High School (Grades 11–12 | IB Diploma Programme) From the 2024–25 academic year, SIS offers the IB Diploma Programme (DP) for students aged 16–19. As the culmination of the IB journey, the DP challenges students academically while supporting intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development. Through a rigorous curriculum and final examinations, students are well prepared for university and future pathways worldwide. Together, this continuum reflects SIS’s commitment to delivering a high-quality, globally focused education that equips students to thrive in an interconnected world.

Beyond Classroom

At SIS, co-curricular learning is a core part of student life, designed to build confidence, skills, and a strong sense of community. Swimming Programme (PYP: PreS–Grade 5) All Primary students benefit from weekly 45-minute swimming lessons at the nearby Konami Sports Club. Led by qualified Konami coaches alongside SIS staff, sessions focus on water safety, coordination, balance, and physical development. Students are grouped by ability and progress through the Konami certification levels. (Additional fee applies.) After School Programmes (ASPs) From Tuesdays to Thursdays, SIS offers 70+ after-school programmes, giving students the freedom to explore interests beyond the classroom. Options span academics, arts, technology, and sports, including coding, robotics, LEGO construction, Model United Nations, Chinese and Japanese language clubs, STEAM, drama, dance, music ensembles, visual arts, and mindfulness. Sports options include football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, gymnastics, taekwondo, table tennis, yoga, and more. Most ASPs are complimentary, with some specialist-led activities involving material or instructor fees. Experiential Learning & Trips Grade 5 students take part in residential learning trips that build independence and resilience, with past experiences including Minakami canyons, Chiba camping, and Mt. Fuji exploration. Secondary students regularly engage in curriculum-linked field trips across Tokyo—museum visits, cultural workshops, and hiking expeditions—deepening subject understanding through real-world experiences. Together, SIS’s extracurricular and experiential programmes ensure students develop holistically—academically, socially, and physically—while forming meaningful connections beyond the classroom.
