Canadian International School Tokyo

Canadian International School Tokyo

Canadian International School Tokyo (CIS) was founded in 1999 and is a fully accredited Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12 Canadian international school. From its inception, CIS adopted the curriculum of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island (PEI) and continues to be annually accredited through on-site inspections conducted by the PEI Department of Education. The PEI curriculum used at CIS is fully accredited across all four Atlantic Provinces in Canada. CIS is recognised by Japan’s Ministry of Education (MEXT), ensuring that its high school graduation qualification is accepted for entry into Japanese universities. The school is also accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and is authorised to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) from Kindergarten to Grade 5. Academic provision at CIS blends a rigorous Canadian curriculum with the inquiry-based philosophy of the IB and the quality assurance of WASC standards, supporting strong academic foundations alongside critical thinking and problem-solving skills. All teachers at CIS are PEI-certified, meeting the professional requirements expected of educators in Canadian public and private schools. CIS is a member of the Japan Council of International Schools and the Tokyo Association of International Preschools, and is recognised for providing internationally transferable qualifications within a structured, globally respected education framework.

Academic Excellence

Learning at Canadian International School Tokyo is designed as a continuous journey from early childhood through to graduation, preparing students for success at leading universities worldwide. In Kindergarten and Preschool, learning is student-centred and inquiry-based. Children are introduced to English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, music, art, and physical education through play, learning centres, and guided instruction. Small class sizes allow for personalised support, while the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) builds curiosity, communication, and a strong foundation for lifelong learning. From Grades 1 to 9, CIS blends the Canadian curriculum with international approaches to deepen academic understanding and critical thinking. Students build strong literacy and numeracy skills, develop independence, and learn to collaborate effectively, preparing them for the academic demands of senior school. In Grades 10 to 12, students follow a fully accredited Canadian secondary programme, earning a Prince Edward Island (PEI) Graduation Certificate, recognised across Canada and internationally. This rigorous pathway meets university entrance requirements in Canada, the US, Japan, and beyond. CIS also offers the Advanced Placement (AP) programme, allowing students to take university-level courses in subjects such as Calculus, English, World History, Chemistry, and Physics. AP qualifications are widely recognised and may provide university credit or advanced placement. Across all year levels, students are supported to grow academically and personally, developing the confidence, skills, and global mindset needed for future study and life beyond school.

Beyond Classroom

At CIS, students are actively encouraged to participate in group and extracurricular activities that foster leadership, collaboration, and personal responsibility. Through these experiences, students develop confidence, teamwork, and a strong sense of initiative. In Junior High School, learners are further guided to understand the connectedness between actions and consequences, helping them develop ethical decision-making, accountability, and respect for others—skills that are essential for success both in school and beyond.
