Aoba-Japan International School

Aoba-Japan International School

Aoba-Japan International School (Aoba) traces its origins to founder Regina Doi, who first established Aoba as a bilingual early childhood centre offering nursery to pre-first grade classes. Her vision was to give young Japanese learners a strong foundation in English, preparing them for success in both international and Japanese school systems. Situated near the American School and several local kindergartens, Aoba quickly attracted interest from both expatriate and Japanese families, paving the way for expansion. Encouraged by strong community support, Aoba opened Japan International School, offering elementary and junior high programmes. As enrolment grew, the school relocated multiple times — from Harajuku to Shibuya, and eventually to Suginami Ward in 1992. In 1998, it was renamed Aoba-Japan International School, marking a significant milestone in its evolution. A major transformation came in 2012, when Aoba moved to its purpose-built Hikarigaoka campus, enabling the school to operate as a full K–12 institution with impressive facilities including a full-size soccer pitch, gymnasium, swimming pool, and playgrounds. Continued growth led to the opening of a dedicated Bunkyo Campus for high school students, strengthening Aoba’s reach in central Tokyo. Aoba is now a fully authorised IB World School, offering the PYP, MYP, and DP, with full authorisation achieved in 2022. In 2025, Aoba expanded further with the launch of its IB Diploma Programme Online Course, providing students access to flexible, high-quality international education from anywhere in the world. Today, Aoba is home to a diverse student body representing over 45 nationalities, reflecting its global outlook and commitment to nurturing internationally minded learners.

Academic Excellence

Aoba-Japan International School offers a seamless international education from ages 3 to 18, grounded in the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework and delivered across three purposefully designed campuses — Meguro, Hikarigaoka, and Bunkyo. Each campus provides age-appropriate learning environments that support curiosity, independence, and global-mindedness. At the Meguro Campus (K2–K5), young learners aged 1.6 to 6 years experience a nurturing, inquiry-rich Early Years programme rooted in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). Through play-based exploration, transdisciplinary themes, and personalised instruction, children build foundational skills in social-emotional development, communication, thinking, and self-management. The Hikarigaoka Campus (Kindergarten–Grade 9) offers a multi-age Early Years setting (K3–K5), a comprehensive PYP Primary School (Grades 1–6), and a Middle School (Grades 7–9) that continues to foster inquiry, collaboration, and conceptual understanding. Students engage with integrated learning experiences supported by passionate educators and a strong community culture. The Bunkyo Campus (Grades 10–12) features a modern, university-style environment with specialised learning spaces, including a black-box theatre, sound-proof music studios, and multimedia rooms. In Grade 10, students follow a research- and project-based curriculum supported by real-world internships. For Grades 11–12, students choose between the IB Diploma Programme (IB DP) or the Aoba Global Leadership Diploma (GLD) — both flexible, personalised pathways that prepare students for leading universities and future careers.

Beyond Classroom

Aoba-Japan International School offers one of Tokyo’s most diverse and enriching after-school and seasonal learning ecosystems, designed to nurture creativity, confidence, global mindedness, and personal growth. Through a wide range of After-School Programmes (ASP), summer and seasonal camps, performing arts opportunities, and inter-school sports, students engage in meaningful learning far beyond the classroom. The ASP welcomes both Aoba and external students, offering activities that span academics, arts, language learning, technology, and sports. Younger learners enjoy Multi-Sports and Jungle Play, while programmes like Street Dance, Karate, Pilates, and Taekwondo build coordination and resilience. Tech enthusiasts explore Robotics and Coding through hands-on tools such as ScratchJr, Mindstorms, and Microbits, while students interested in Japanese language can join JFL and Kokugo-focused ASP classes. Creative expression flourishes in street dance, drama, and music—with the Junior Orchestra and specialised performing arts sessions enriching students’ artistic development. Aoba’s holistic approach extends into its Summer School, where inquiry-based projects, music sessions, team sports, and an exclusive AI project-building programme (led by Stanford, MIT, and Ivy League alumni) spark innovation and confidence. Seasonal programmes also include a popular Winter Sports Camp for Grades 4–10, featuring skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and cultural exploration. The school’s strong performing arts culture spans Kindergarten to Senior School, offering opportunities in music, drama, dance, and theatre. Students learn in state-of-the-art facilities—including specialised studios and a black-box theatre—while performing on school and professional stages across Tokyo. Athletics plays a prominent role through the Jaguars programme, which promotes teamwork and sportsmanship across sports such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, badminton, and integrated swimming. Students compete, collaborate, and build resilience, fostering both school pride and lifelong wellbeing. Through these varied experiences, Aoba ensures every student finds pathways to discover passions, build essential life skills, and grow into confident, well-rounded global citizens.
